Hermeticism

Hermes Trismegistus

Hermeticism is a school of study based on the work of Hermes Trismegistus. The principal tenet is "as above, so below", in other words everything that is in heaven is in some way reflected in what happens on the earth and vice versa. It also involves a development of the Greek Theory of four elements: (earth, air, fire, water), and leads naturally into the development of Alchemy.

Hermeticism has become the Western Esoteric Tradition, a System of Mysticism. It is a foundation for many other systems such as Alchemy, Rosicrucianism, Golden Dawn, etc. It shares its knowledge with other traditions. It started in Egypt and Greece with a few documents, such as the Emerald Tablet, but is now a large body of knowledge.

Instead of attempting to reproduce this material here, I invite your visit to the following five sites: The Gnostic Society Library, Hermetic Fellowship, J. R. Ritman Library, Frater 93's page about Theosophy, and 2000 C.E. at The Four + Corners. These resources in the following order, should give you a good foundation for Hermeticism.

1. This is a good place to start your study of Hermeticism. The Gnostic Society Library has "The Corpus Hermeticum", an excellent, easy to understand body of knowledge that will give you a fundamental understanding of this complex subject.

2. For a document "What is Hermeticism?" from the Hermetic Fellowship.

3. For the J. R. Ritman Library: "Hermetic Philosophy". Located in Amsterdam.

4. For The Natue of Hermetic Wisdom. This is a good short synopsis of Hermetcism.

5. This is a necessary Index of the 17 Books of the Corpus Hermeticum or the Divine Pymander of Hermes, (1650 printing). These manuscripts are on this site. It is a good reference resource for studying the basic writings of Hermes.

His voice carries down through the centuries.
Never diminished, it echoes anew in every epoch.
Every ear that can hear it is inspired
to bind things together and to build.

All our race has achieved we owe
to his clear enunciation of the Word.
Every pyramid, every masterpiece, every feat of science,
was long foreseen in blueprints from his hand.

And now my brethren speak the words to me
that clearly show the path to mastering myself.
I vow to listen patiently, to learn how to lift the veil.
And I will build. If I am worthy, I will build.
